The Project

The Third World Liberation Front and Fight for Ethnic Studies

A coalition of minority students at the University of California Berkeley and San Francisco State University led to the creation of the first Ethnic Studies departments at major universities. The success of their movement produced nationwide discussions about how we educate. Today there are Ethnic Studies departments at most universities nationally and movements for Ethnic Studies in many secondary school districts, furthering the US education system to represent the make up of our country.

The Theme

Breaking Barriers in History

Breaking Barriers in History, allowed us to examine a topic not covered in school curriculums but pivotal to the advancement of our education system. The Third World Liberation Front was one of the first movements that pushed back against the white, western-centric education that leaves out the stories of much of our country. During the time of our project there was a movement for Ethnic Studies in Saint Paul Public Schools and our research pushed us to sign petitions, advocate, and see the lasting legacy of the Third World Liberation Front.
